The South District for Lancashire Music Service includes South Ribble, Chorley, and West Lancashire. We deliver whole class instrumental lessons, small group, and individual lessons in schools across the region, but we also have fabulous opportunities for young musicians outside school.
The South District is proud to be the host the Lancashire County Music Ensembles. St. Michael’s High School in Chorley is host to the Lancashire Youth Brass Band, Lancashire Schools Brass Band, Lancashire Schools Jazz Orchestra, Lancashire School’s Symphony Orchestra, Lancashire Youth Orchestra, Lancashire Schools Concert Band, Lancashire Schools Brass Band and Honk!
We hope all young musicians from all over Lancashire will aspire to be part of the County Ensembles, but for those in the earlier stages of their musical journey, we also have Inspire Ensembles. Inspire ensembles are a wonderful way to expand your musical journey outside of school; they are perfect for those of you who have just started to learn in whole class music lessons but love it and want to do more! The Wind Brass and Percussion Inspire, Strings Inspire, and Pop Inspire rehearse at St. Michael’s High School. More details can be found by following the hyperlinks.
Chorley Young Voices is a fabulous opportunity for young primary ages singers. They also rehearse at St. Michael’s on Saturday mornings, with the first session in September taking place on Saturday 7th, running from 9.45am to 10.45am. The morning’s musical activities can also be extended by coming along to the Chorley Ukulele Band. The Ukulele band will be for pupils in Years 3+, and will run from 11.00 to 11.45am. These two activities will give busy parents the perfect amount of time for the weekly supermarket run!
Ormskirk Music Centre provides musical activities for young musicians living in West Lancashire. If you are having whole class instrument lessons in Skelmersdale, Parbold, Banks, Aughton, Burscough, or Ormskirk, this Music Centre is waiting to welcome you! You can refine and develop your skills through individual and group lessons available on a wide range of instruments, and you can also develop ensemble skills and make great new friends by joining the West Lancs Young Voices, Ensemble for All, or the Rock Band. Click the Ormskirk Music Centre hyperlink to find out more!
As well as regular ensembles and lessons, LMS also run local events for specific schools that are already engaging in our whole class music lessons. The aim of these WCIT Play Events is to bring the most enthusiastic beginner musicians together and inspire them to want to make more music together in an ensemble outside of school. Last year these events were held for brass and wind players in Penwortham and Leyland, but we are hoping to expand this offer to a wider range of instrument and localities over 2024/25. If your school might be interested in hosting a WCIT event please ask your Music Coordinator to contact play.music@lanashire.gov.uk
Look out for our larger musical celebrations too: Our winter musical celebrations will take place in Chorley on Sunday 8th December, and Saturday 14th September. These concerts will showcase our amazing county ensembles, inspire groups, and Music Centre ensembles. Brass Attack will be held at Lostock Hall Academy in July, West Lancs Big Play will be held at Ormskirk Academy.
