We are delighted that once again Lancashire Music Service will be running our popular ‘Instrument Days’ across the academic year! The days offer the chance for complete beginners through to advanced musicians to come together and celebrate their instrumental specialisms, or have a go for the very first time! It is an opportunity for like minded young people from across our County to have an enjoy a large scale inclusive instrumental project. From Strings to Percussion there is something for everyone with some exciting brand new days for 24/25!

Click on of the links below to find out more!

Strings Day

Brass Day

Woodwind Day

Here’s what people say about our instrument days:

“My girls have absolutely loved attending the sessions and since the brass day one has hired a cornet! Thank you so much for letting them stay for the sharing show at the end of the day as complete brass beginners. The brass day was their absolute favourite out of the three. They would have liked a longer try on other woodwind instruments than recorder but still has a fabulous day overall. They thought the Marines were inspiring and loved playing the snares and the glockenspiel. They are looking forward to more days like this in the future to try new instruments or just ones they don’t have lessons in. My eldest has joined Strings Inspire since the days and we love that our weekends have been full of music and joy. As parents we have loved seeing the children play at the end of the day and the kids are always inspired by those having played the instrument for longer. Thank you so much for all your organisation, we look forward to joining more of these sorts of days in the future. What a fantastic opportunity for the children, music is so good for them.!

“Thank you for creating such a wonderful celebration of music. Em is more inspired and enthusiastic about playing and I loved hearing all the young people playing together at the end of the day. I used to play until 6th form when the demands of ‘real life’ got too busy, and it reminded me of the power and vital importance of music to make life a better place. Thank you.”

“My daughter had a tearful spell during the day and I cannot praise Jay and the lady who looked after her highly enough. Very kind and caring. She loved her day and it reignited her desire to play.”

“What a day! Thank you so much for creating such a warm, welcoming, supportive environment where Eva could have fun with music. She had an absolute ball and learned so much. And the pride on the faces of all the young people at the end of the day was a joy to see. The whole day was a brilliant example of how to engage young people in music. Thank you.”

“Elijah said he wished he could do that every Saturday. Music is his happy place he has had a tough start in life so days like these mean everything to him. Thank you to all of the people involved we know that behind these days there is a lot of hard work. Well done LMS what a fabulous day.”

“Would love opportunities that brings all ensembles and new people together more often. Really enjoyed having exposure to other types of music and ways of playing. She has also stated that she would like to be like Toby the RNCM Engage person and follow in his footsteps and then become a music teacher herself.”

“It was amazing. She absolutely loved it. It would have been great as a parent to know up front the timetable as I could have dropped off and picked up rather than hanging around – though I did get to chat and find out a lot from being there, also got to listen to some awesome music!”

“More please!”

“Very enjoyable day & very well organised.”

“Natalie had a fantastic time at Brass Day. Thank you so much to everyone involved from Lancashire Music Service for such a wonderful opportunity.”

“As always, Jake thoroughly enjoyed his day. He thinks all of the tutors are amazing and loves spending the day with all his best friends. He really enjoyed working with the RNCM students as well. It is also great to see former members of LMS ensembles helping out at these events.”

“Fabulous day, skilled and friendly staff, well organised. Watching the kids flourish at the end sharing was brilliant. Thank you 😊”

Here’s what people are saying about our Lancashire Sings;

Victoria Harter, Lytham C of E Primary School

“I just wanted to say a huge thank you to you and your team for inviting us to take part in the ‘Big Sing’. All the children that we brought went back to school feeling amazing. One of our boys on the way home said ‘I don’t think I have ever felt this happy’. It has made me reflect on the power of singing and what joy it can bring into your soul. We really don’t do enough of it in school, but hopefully we can change that.”

Paul Bowden, Slyne-with-Hest St Luke’s CE Primary School

It is wonderful to see children from a wide range of schools across our district singing enthusiastically and enjoying the whole experience that this annual event offers. The setting of the Ashton Hall coupled with performing with a band of live musicians provides an experience that they will hopefully remember for many years to come.”

Glyn Gibbons, North Road Community Primary School, Carnforth

“This is such a wonderfully creative way of uniting all the children, across the borough, through the joy of song. Over the years, I’ve seen the confidence in performing and the appreciation of music, developed brilliantly in so many children, who have taken part in this amazing event.”

Joanne Geldard, Lancaster Lane Primary School

“This will probably be my one and only chance in life to sing on stage with a live band… What an absolutely wonderful day that was. Thank you to everyone involved.”

Cate Gili-Ross, St Peters Catholic Primary School, Lytham

“I just wanted to drop you a quick email to say how wonderful yesterday’s Big Sing was. From start to finish it was such a joyful event and to see all the children having such a wonderful time was truly priceless, not to mention how much it helped our wellbeing as teachers. We can’t wait for next year.”

Crossgate Church in Preston was resounding with the voices of 250 Key Stage 2 children from schools across the area on 5th June, taking part in Lancashire Music Hub’s Lancashire Sings event.

Children from 7 primary schools across the area entertained their families and friends, with a programme of songs from around the world entitled “Olympic Spirit” accompanied by a live band.

Emma Williams, Lancashire Music Service’s Vocal Lead said “This year we have over 3500 children and over 100 schools involved in our Lancashire Sings! events. The benefits of singing are widely known and bringing local schools together as a musical community to sing alongside inspirational musicians and sharing their skills with audiences from their community, creates long lasting musical memories and hopefully a lifelong love for singing.”

The singers were conducted by Vocal Leader Charlie Brown who said “I remember loving taking part in a similar scheme when I was at school. The memory of it has stuck with me, so I jumped at the opportunity to share that experience with others. I hope it will be the first of many!”

Here’s what the choir of Holy Family Catholic School had to say.

“It was amazing. I absolutely loved it”.

“I really liked singing with all my friends and enjoying ourselves. It was the best time ever and all of the songs were delightful.”

Recently young musicians of all abilities from across the county, gathered for three of our large scale ‘Instrument Day’ events.

We want to give a massive thank you! to all our staff, volunteers, parents and young people that make these days possible!

Music has been a longstanding tradition in Lancashire, these events help us revive communities of young musicians locally and encourage the next generation! If you want to support young people in this, don’t forget you can always donate!

Here’s what people had to say (on behalf of our young musicians) about our three events! (All quotes have been submitted anonymously):

We’re thrilled to announce that Lancashire Music Service has been chosen by Arts Council England to lead music education across Lancashire as the new Music Hub Lead Organisation from September 2024.
Music Hubs play a crucial role in providing access to music education for all, and we’re honoured to be part of this initiative!
Music has been a longstanding tradition across Lancashire – and we are dedicated to high quality music education across our county.

On behalf of the Department for Education, Arts Council England has announced a new generation of Music Hubs, covering every part of England.

The new Music Hubs form an ambitious national programme providing high-quality music education for all children and young people through investment in musical activities, equipment and teacher training.

Building on the extensive work existing Music Education Hubs have undertaken since 2011, the new Hubs will be led by 43 Hub Lead Organisations from September 2024.

Download the list of new Hub Lead Organisations >

New Hub Lead Organisations will receive over £101 million from the Department for Education. This includes £76 million in regular funding for the Music Hubs programme and £25 million to invest in musical instruments, equipment and technology, including resources specifically designed for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities.

Download a spreadsheet of the new Music Hub areas and funding allocations >

The Hub Lead Organisations will work in partnership with schools, colleges, universities, cultural organisations, local authorities and other educational, creative and community organisations to deliver a broad range of musical activities which are inclusive to pupils from all backgrounds, as well as access to teachers working with a wider variety of instruments, supported by a more connected music education workforce. Hubs also have plans to work with world class organisations including Glyndebourne Festival Opera, the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and BBC Proms to give children and young people more opportunities to benefit from connections with England’s thriving music industry.

The new Music Hubs will help to deliver the Government’s National Plan for Music Education. This plan aims to give all children and young people the opportunity to develop their musical talents fully, by ensuring that children and young people across the country have the chance to learn to sing, play instruments, and make music with their peers. The new Hubs will also help to deliver the Arts Council’s 2020-30 year strategy, Let’s Create, which aims to improve access to creativity and culture for all children, no matter what their background or where they live.

Darren Henley, Chief Executive at Arts Council England, said: “Music education is enormously powerful – it can enrich young people’s lives, help them connect with the people around them, and start them on the pathway to fruitful and fulfilling careers. We are excited to announce this investment in a new generation of Music Hubs, which will support the brilliant work of our dedicated music teachers across the country, and help bring high-quality music education to even more children and young people in every part of England.”

School Standards Minister, Damian Hinds, said “Studying and engaging with music isn’t a privilege, it’s a vital part of a broad and ambitious curriculum – and all children and young people should have access to an excellent music education and all the knowledge and joy it brings.

“Music Hubs play a crucial role in delivering high quality music education in England, and our newly announced Hub Lead Organisations will ensure every child across the country has the chance to develop a love for music, whether it’s through singing, learning to play an instrument or creating their own music.”

Minister for Arts, Heritage & Libraries, Lord Parkinson of Whitley Bay, said “This investment helps to deliver the Government’s plan for music education — including £25 million for musical instruments so that more children, whatever their background, can enjoy the life-changing benefits of music.

“Whether it’s encouraging young people to pursue a career in our growing creative industries, or simply introducing new generations to the pleasure of music-making, this funding will help to unlock opportunities and nurture talent across the country — and demonstrate, as our national plan does, the power of music to change lives.”

Bridget Whyte, Chief Executive at Music Mark said “The UK Association for Music Education – Music Mark is looking forward to supporting the new Hub Lead Organisations and the many partners they will work with to support children and young people’s music education across the country. Building on the many successful and exciting programmes of activity delivered by the Music Education Hub Partnerships between 2012 and 2024, this new network will continue to engage our talented and diverse music education workforce to support schools as well as providing opportunities in local communities which will enable students to develop their musical skills. Within these programmes of activity, will be our next generation of music industry employees, but we also know that all participating students will gain skills which will enrich and sustain a life-long connection to music.”

We are incredibly excited to announce that we are a Youth Music IDEA Champion for 2024!

Learn more about what the IDEA initiative is and read our case study ‘Developing Engagement with Muslim Communities’

Sample

Lancashire is a county with a significant South Asian population, making up 10.1% of the overall school
population and this rises to around 33% in some districts. Within our Muslim communities, there are some specific barriers to accessing music making and, while there is a diversity of attitudes, Islamic beliefs can complicate participation in musical activities for children and young people.

Musician and Educator, Hussnain Hanif, collected some views from the Muslim community in Pendle as
part of a report commissioned by Lancashire Music Service:

“They don’t seem to understand our culture and Islam. There’s a fine line in what is allowed and what isn’t when it comes to music, so I’m sure you can understand why we’re scared for our kids to do this.”

Farzana (parent)

“If we are going to participate in music lessons, we should be clear as to what is being taught and why. The best way to learn music for our children would be through Nasheeds. This way we know our children’s imaan (faith) is not being destroyed through this. They can learn all types of music through Nasheeds.”

Faith Leader

“Studying creative subjects (performing arts, music, drama, fine art) is hugely problematic for
Pakistani Muslims purely for the reason that it doesn’t align with the traditional views of many and
isn’t a money maker. South-Asian families want better for their children and therefore push them to
study hard to become medical professionals, teachers, solicitors etc.”

Hussenain Hanif, 2023

Schools – register your interest now to bring a group of pupils to our Creative Careers Event at UCLan on Monday 13th November.

Preston Local Cultural Education Partnership (LCEP) have created this opportunity to inspire Key Stage 3 pupils and raise their awareness of the huge variety of careers in the arts and creative industries. As well as information on pathways into careers, there will be a diverse panel of representatives working in both creative and supporting roles in the cultural sector who will talk about their own experiences and answer question from your pupils. The session will finish off with a hands on creative challenge working in smaller groups.

The aim is to encourage year 8 or 9 pupils to consider taking creative subjects at GCSE level, so we recommend targeting this opportunity at smaller number of specific pupils rather than bringing a whole year group.

The event is free of charge although you will have to provide your own transport to The Media Centre, UCLan.

There are two sessions: 9.30am – 11.30am and 12.30pm – 2.30pm. We have 60 places for each session. These will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

To register your interest please fill in our online form: https://forms.office.com/e/2tnVMBhmqa

Last week, wonderful young voices could be heard inside Chorley’s historical town hall!

Led by Emma Williams, several schools came together to celebrate music, singing and community at the heart of Chorley.

The Big Sing came out of Lancashire Music Hub’s collaboration with the Chorley Schools Sports Partnership. The Sports Partnership bring hundreds of young people together across the year in sporting activities and games but we were really keen to explore the positive effects singing brings to young people’s wellbeing.

“We wanted to give some schools in the Chorley area the chance to find their voices, work with inspiring vocal leaders to build their enthusiasm and then share that passion in a historic local venue”  said Emma Williams, Lancashire Music Hub’s Singing Leader

Chorley is one of our Big Sings which are continuing to expand across the county, creating opportunities and moments to remember for both pupils and their teachers.

What our Big Sing schools say:

SS Peter & Paul’s RC Primary School Mawdesley

Fantastic day rehearsing and singing at the Chorley Big Sing concert. Well done children you were amazing and your colourful flags and kites looked incredible.

Lancaster Lane Primary School

Year 4 attended Chorley Big Sing today, they all had a fabulous time.

Our Music Hub Youth Board, Amplify, are working with the National Festival of Music for Youth to host a prestigious Citizen’s Assembly on Saturday 8th of July. Amplify have been working with London’s Tri Borough Music Hub to create the event which will bring together young people with representatives from the music industry, education, and policy makers to debate the future of music education.

A Citizens Assembly brings people together to deliberate on issues and recommend solutions that shape the future of policy. The assembly is a democratic approach to solve problems in access to  and progression in music  and empower young people, whether they want to develop their skills, build a career in music or experience it as a source of joy.

The event is taking place at B:Music, Birmingham from 10am – 2pm. The format is as follows:

  • Young people are brought together to form an audience and deliberate on issues effecting music education and/or industry
  • A series of themes, questions and topics are posed to the panel of senior music education and industry professionals
  • Young people get analyse and question what they hear in response to the panel
  • Facilitators then help the audience to explore these range of issues and discuss solutions via roundtable discussions
  • The group arrives at a series of recommendations (which makes up a manifesto)

If you would like to attend this special event or bring a group of young people along to take part, please complete the application form.

Please join us in supporting our young people in the North and get the word out!

After a three-year break, glorious singing returned to Lancaster Town Hall last week, with over 1500 local school children coming together to perform five concerts at The Ashton Hall as part of the 2023 Lancaster and District Schools’ Singing Festival.  The children aged between five and eleven from 37 primary schools in Lancaster, Morecambe and the surrounding districts, entertained their families and friends as well as local dignitaries including the Mayor of Lancaster, Councillor Joyce Pritchard with newly composed pieces, pops songs and songs from around the world.

In addition to the wonderful singing, the festival was able to showcase the talents of young local musicians: Ellie Knowles and Annie Hughes (vocalists); Ash Murphy and Logan Aitchinson (beatbox); Hannah Wickes & Clara Spence (saxophonists) and the Turning Point Theatre Art dancers.

The festival was bequeathed the use the Ashton Hall for one week a year to promote singing in schools over 70 years ago, and continues to be supported by Lancaster City Council.  The number of schools and children taking part in 2023 represented the largest festival to date.

The festival project has two focus areas:  Key Stage 1 led by Debbie Pilkington, supported by Emma Williams, Singing Lead for the Lancashire Music Hub, who also leads the Key Stage 2 concerts.

Debbie Pilkington, KS1 conductor said:

“We have really missed being able to hold our festival in the historic Ashton Hall and return with songs celebrating our ‘Wonderful World’ and ‘We’re All in this Together’. It has been a privilege to be back working with our local schools. To be greeted with excitement and enthusiasm, not just from the children but from the staff too, is testament to the boost to our well-being that singing together can bring.”

Emma Williams, Singing Lead for the Lancashire Music Hub who conducts KS2 said:

“It is so exciting to be back with our singing schools in the Ashton Hall for the first time since 2019. The Singing Festival has a long, wonderful legacy of bringing our school community together in song and this year is no exception. Hearing all the young voices will be total joy!”

Paul Bowden, Headteacher at Slyne-with-Hest St Luke’s CE Primary School, and a member of the organising committee said:

‘It is a joy to see the smiles on the children’s faces as they have practised the songs to take part in this years Singing Festival. Having had to take a break from the festival during and after the pandemic, it is wonderful that we have returned and bigger and better than ever. The festival is a long-standing treasure in the school calendar.’

Sarah Harding, KS2 teacher, Overton-St-Helens

It has been wonderful to see the confidence develop and shine through our children as they have learnt new songs! They are very much ready for and excited about performing to an audience in such a grand venue!”

Alex Thomas, Year 2 Class Teacher, Bowerham Primary and Nursery School

“The Year 2 children at Bowerham have absolutely loved practising the songs for the singing festival. They have really enjoyed exploring songs in different languages and cannot wait to perform with the band at the Ashton Hall.”

It’s a very special day on Saturday 25th March as Lancashire Youth Brass Band will be competing in the National Youth Brass Band Championships at Stockport Grammar School.
It’s also a very special day for Musical Director Helen Minshall, as she and her husband Stephen will be celebrating their 40th Wedding Anniversary!
The couple first met in 1981. Helen was studying music at Salford, and Stephen was a member of Eccles Borough Band. They first met at a band rehearsal, and eventually got married on 25th March 1983, taking the entire Swinton Concert Brass Band on honeymoon with them to Pontins at Brean Sands for the Easter Brass Band Contest.

Helen and Stephen have played in brass bands all their lives, been on tour to many different countries, performed at the Royal Albert Hall together, and many other prestigious venues. Brass banding is a huge part of their lives and it means the world to them.
They have two children who grew up in the brass band world. Simon now age 31 lives in London and has made a big name for himself as a freelance professional bass trombonist. He’s currently working in the West End on the show “Back to the Future”. He met his wife, Kate, a euphonium player, at band practice at Bolton Music Centre when they were both 13. Their daughter Samantha now age 30 is a magnificent tuba player, and studied at RNCM. She teaches alongside Helen in the family company, Minshall Music LTD. She met her husband, Neil Raisbeck, a tenor horn player, at a band rehearsal at Marsden Band. Neil is the Lancashire Youth Brass Band horn tutor, and also works in the family company.

Helen and Stephen formed Astley Youth Band in 1994, and the band has gone from strength to strength over the years, enjoying a great reputation for nurturing generations of young brass players, many who have carried on playing into adulthood. Helen spent 10 years as Musical Director of the Bolton Youth Brass Band, and with Stephen’s support, took the band on a magnificent tour to America in 2008. Since Helen took over as MD of Lancashire Youth Brass Band in 2015, Stephen has regularly attended concerts and tours to support the band and share his expertise.
What more fitting way would there be for Helen and Stephen to celebrate their 40th anniversary than by spending the day at the National Youth Brass Band Championships!

The first ever Lytham Big Sing for KS2 children is a huge success!

On the 7th of March, Lytham Big Sing launched at the historical Lowther Pavilion. 6 Schools & 243 children came together to ‘breathe life into the walls of a great, local venue’.

As the first ever local Big Sing for Primary KS2 children, we are proud to say as a Hub, the day was a huge success! The event was developed and led by Emma Williams, Singing Lead for the Lancashire Music Hub, and conducted by Tim Uffindell.

Both the Mayor and Mayoress of Fylde (Cllr Ben Aitken and Bernadette Nolan JP) attended the day, presenting certificates to the 6 schools; The Mayor gave a short vote of thanks stating how marvellous the event was and how moved he was.

Here is what Teachers, Children and Parents had to say about the Lytham Big Sing:

Teachers said:

“Well, what can I say. We had the most amazing time singing and performing today. All our children thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. Thank you so much for putting this together, working so hard so that we can all enjoy having a great sing. Can’t wait till next year! Thank you again.”

“I just wanted to say how wonderful Lytham Big Sing was. From start to finish it was such a joyful event and to see all the children having such a wonderful time was truly priceless, not to mention how much it helped our wellbeing as teachers. We can’t wait for next year.”

“Lytham Big Sing was a fantastic opportunity for our school to come together with other local schools and experience the joy of singing and performing with incredible musicians. Our children thoroughly enjoyed the whole day and it has created a real buzz around singing. Performing in a local venue for a real audience is something these children will remember for years to come.”

The children said:

“It was amazing!”

“It was so fun to see lots of different schools come together and sing.”

“Tim was cool.”

“Tim and Emma were really funny.”

“It brought joy into our hearts.”

“We all enjoyed it, and it was lots of fun.”

“I loved performing with the other schools.”

“I loved how we signed as well as sang. This meant more people could understand it.”

“We learnt that singing can make such an impact on our lives.”

“I loved learning to sing in different languages.”

Parents said:

“What a brilliant afternoon. It was well worth half a day’s annual leave!”

Once again we want to thank every single person that made this event possible, and a special thankyou to our ‘funny & cool’ Emma Williams and Tim Uffindell for hosting a great day!
